Project objectives/short summary

_________________

The project aims to increase competitiveness of the local economy through the enhancement of joint tourist offers based on common cultural identity of the cross-border region.
Shared cultural identity of this region is based on historical pilgrimage route. In 1689, Franciscan monks fled from the region of Prozor-Rama in BiH due to the Ottoman invasion. In their efforts to preserve items of religious and cultural significance, they took the painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy to Sinj, Croatia. The Ottoman armies laid siege to the City of Sinj in 1715. Despite overwhelming odds, the local army of Sinj defeated the Ottomans and the victory was attributed to the special powers of the picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Each year pilgrims from Croatia, BiH and other countries make their way to Sinj along the "Our Lady of Sinj Route" in order pay homage to the Blessed Virgin.
The project builds on these cultural links and connects cross-border communities through development of joint tourist offer. Apart from increasing attractiveness of the pilgrimage walking and cycling route through the setting up of a small scale infrastructure along 150 kilometres, the project will also enhance knowledge and skills of tourism service providers. Development of Joint Tourism Promotion Strategy will serve as excellent tool for strategic co-ordination of efforts of tourism stakeholders in the project area.

The project targets cross-border area characterized with weak social bonds and aims to improve social networks and relations between target local governments and civil society organizations representing interests of elderly citizens, women and youth.
In order to strengthen and promote cross-border partnerships, stakeholders were informed about benefits and opportunities that cross-border co-operation offers to local communities. Main objective of the project was to increase crop productions and raise farmers' incomes in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. More specifically, the Project intended to develop and equip irrigation demonstration plots and to introduce overall learning system on how to manage irrigation in continuum starting from studying of crop response to water, through efficient use of water and its effects on the improvement of crop productivity. In order to promote and expand the use of irrigation in the agricultural crops cultivation, a study report on current practices and legal framework on irrigation management issues in targeted cross-border area was developed. Aiming to demonstrate benefits of the use of the irrigation systems, seventeen demonstration plots with irrigation systems were selected and equipped. Data collected from demonstration fields related to crop productivity and water use efficiency were compared with the data from non-irrigated fields. The results confirmed that the use of appropriate irrigation methods is resource and cost beneficial and should be widely applied in agricultural crop production.
Through organization of capacity building activities, farmers and technicians learned how to manage on-farm irrigation systems through design, operation and maintenance of the irrigation equipment. This project strongly emphasises cross-border best practices exchange and networking. Transfer of knowledge and experiences of "AgroMAP NETWORK" operating in Bosnia and Herzegovina to partners in Croatia will support a creation of the network of Medicinal and Aromatic Pants (MAP) actors in Croatia. The establishment of the MAP actors' network in Croatia will enable regional cooperation of networks and create preconditions for clustering. Conversely, transfer of knowledge and experiences from Croatia to partners in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the field of legislation applicable in the MAP sector will initiate relevant Bosnia and Herzegovina institutions to adopt similar legislation that will improve SMEs business operations in MAP sector in EU.
Project educational activities target collectors, producers and processors of MAP products. They are expected not only to increase SMEs capacities for improved MAP products value chain, but also to strengthen further cooperation among SMEs. Educational material that will be produced, such as MAP Atlas and a Guide for export to the EU countries, will contribute to better preparedness of MAP SMEs to meet challenges while trying to place their MAP products in the EU market. In order to achieve regional recognition, increase competitiveness and access of MAP network products in the market, the project puts specific emphasis on joint marketing activities and creation of new products in line with demand on EU and local market.
